In 2020 (Reiwa 2), our school became the first public elementary school in Japan to introduce a full-scale immersion education program across all grade levels.

Currently, we have 7 general education classes, 6 immersion classes, and 2 special needs classes.

In the immersion classes, all subjects except Japanese language and moral education are taught using English as the

medium of instruction.

What Is Immersion Education?

The term “immersion” in “immersion education” means “to immerse” or “to soak.”
This approach creates an environment where students are surrounded by English on a daily basis.
By being fully immersed in the language, students naturally acquire it as they engage in learning.

Rather than learning about English as a subject, students learn through English—studying specific academic subjects in English itself.

Immersion Education at Hatcho Elementary School

☆In accordance with national curriculum guidelines, students learn subjects other than Japanese language and moral education using English as the language of instruction.
☆Classes are typically team-taught by a Japanese Teacher of English (JTE) and a Native English Teacher (NET).
☆While we prioritize learning in English, Japanese is used when necessary to ensure understanding.
☆Each grade has one immersion class (Class A) with a maximum of 26 students.
☆For more detailed information about enrollment, please refer to the Toyohashi City official website.
☆Please note that our school is not an international school.
